The Terror of Riltar
"Mortalkind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange." – Nicolas Flameable, Leader of the Alchemist's Academy
With magic on the decline, alchemy has been on the rise for some time. First discovered by humans, it was quickly found by the gnomes, who took to it just as quickly as the humans. Then came the goblins, who brought themselves up with their discovery of blackpowder and the first firearms. Any alchemist can tell you that alchemy is a complicated procedure, of breaking down core elements and reassembling them into new ones. The academy itself teaches these rules, such that anyone can learn alchemy. All alchemy however requires an alchemist circle, a conduit for the energy of breaking down, destroying, and reassembling pieces. Ever since its discovery, while great leaps in medicine and technology have been made, so too have been heinous discovieres as well. Mad scientists and lunatics use alchemy to further their schemes, creating horrible living abominations that sellswords are often required to hunt down and slay. Some alchemists within the academy, referred to by sellswords as Profs, hunt down these individuals. Alchemy is held in high regard for the benefits its brought sellswords, most of which being the gearwork prosthetics that can replace entire loss limbs. An often occurance for a sellsword. There are many secrets as to just what alchemy can do, but sellswords themselves make plenty of gold off of the experiments and mad scientists they need to bring in.
